There are over 100 illustrations that help the reader visualize the homestead's historical setting and physical location. Over time, this High Country station has taken on new projects and meaning whilst keeping its basic essentials alive within its historical context.\nOn a more personal level, the book reveals the passionate character of a young stowaway boy who landed in Sydney Cove, Australia, with 2 shillings in his pocket. Over 60 years later, he died having amassed a fortune in money and land titles, and a community of trailblazers. He was responsible for separating Southland from Otago's political management, and in doing so preserved the integrity of his first wife's landholdings, the ancient Murihiku boundaries. His earthly achievements and legacy were extensive. His vision of a good life, generosity, and calm, decisive leadership will also be among the qualities for which he is remembered. Captain Howell's son said at his deathbed, \"... people may not always remember what you achieved, but they will remember how you made them feel.
