The Art of Happiness

A transformative guide to seeing differently--discover how engaging with art can spark joy, improve mental wellbeing, and help you reconnect with creativity, mindfulness, and meaning in everyday life.

For over 50,000 years, art has captured the essence of human experience, offering fresh perspectives and boundless inspiration. In this insightful guide, art historian and educator Matthew Wilson draws on personal insights and historical expertise to examine over seventy works, revealing how visual art offers more than aesthetic pleasure--it can profoundly enrich and transform our lives.

Artists are specialists at seeing the world in divergent and novel ways. By exploring how they think and create, we too can learn to shift our perspectives and embrace new ways of living. Across seven illuminating chapters spanning the themes of creativity, the home, light, work, freedom, solace, and love, readers will discover how engaging with art can provoke joy, mindfulness, and a rekindled zest for life. From David Hockney's epic morning commute to Derek Jarman's serene sanctuaries, from Hiroshi Sugimoto's meditative Uchoten tea house to Cecilia Vicuña's multimedia installation Brain Forest Quipu, and from Johannes Vermeer's humble Milkmaid to Maurizio Cattelan's provocative Comedian, Wilson explores how art can be a practical tool for improving mental wellbeing and rediscovering the beauty of everyday moments.

Whether you're a seasoned art lover or a curious beginner, The Art of Happiness will help you look at and think about art in more personally meaningful ways, encouraging you to approach life with renewed attentiveness and appreciation.
