This publication accompanies Liquid States, the first survey in 20 years of the work of renowned Aotearoa New Zealand painter Gretchen Albrecht. Including paintings, watercolours, collages, and drawings from the 1970s and 1980s, the exhibition delves into Albrecht’s enduring exploration of liquidity, both as conceptual and material force in her practice.
With vivid illustrations and insightful essays from Sue Cramer, Kenneth Brummel, and James Gatt, this publication traces the threads between Albrecht’s 1970s stain paintings, inspired by the natural landscape of Titirangi, and the gestural dynamism of her 1980s gouache and collage works. Together, these diverse bodies of work reveal Albrecht’s profound engagement the flux, and rhythms of nature, which remain central to her practice.
Made possible with the support of the Te Uru Benefactors Collective, Lopdell Trust, and Two Rooms, this publication is an essential resource for understanding the depth and evolution of Albrecht’s artistic vision.
