On the surface it seems like an easy case for private investigator Nicolette Briggs. Retrieve a stolen dog from her client's ex-husband, Richard Townsend. But things are never that easy. Soon the husband ends up dead, and the dog is nowhere to be found. To make matters worse, Nicolette is accused by the police of being involved in the murder.

But Richard Townsend was a con artist, leaving a trail of victims behind him, and there's no shortage of suspects. None of that is Nicolette's concern though, she just needs to find the dog. Meanwhile her daughter, Chloe, has a drama performance coming up, Nicolette somehow invites her family around for dinner, and then there's the mystery of why her step-brother is so determined to break into her house.
