Ron Witcombe wants to get out of Wellington and see the world.

But it’s the middle of the Great Depression and he is stuck in a dead-end job as an office boy. He can’t see any way of changing his destiny.

In 1940, an advertisement in the newspaper catches his eye: ‘Duty calls — the Air Force needs qualified recruits!’

One year later he is flying planes across the Sahara Desert, and he has a rather risky side hustle on the go.
